An agricultural community from its origin, Dartmouth began attracting wealthy members of the nearby whaling city of New Bedford to its beautiful shores during the 19th century. The private communities of Nonquitt, Salter's Point, Mishaum Point, were born and are still very much active to this day.

The southern part of town borders Buzzards Bay, and offers a vibrant boating and fishing community, especially within the village of Padanaram. Pristine beaches and estuaries encompass the landscape. Both North and South Dartmouth support a vibrant farming community that provides many of the area's restaurants with fresh fruits and vegetables year round. The town also has a very active environmental society that protects valuable rural, agricultural, and marine life.
